Hello. My name is Florence Simcoe. I have been a clinical social worker for almost 45 years (and still love it.) I am an LCSW, which is the highest degree of licensure in the state of Arizona- (LCSW 1016). As a clinician, I focus on the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illness, emotional, and other behavioral disturbances. I individualize my theoretical approach to your needs and consider our work to be one of active partnership and collaboration. I work with adolescents, adults, couples, and families.
My approach
I will use whatever approach is most useful and effective. Some of the models I use are: Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) · Attachment-based · Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) · Cognitive Processing (CPT) · Culturally Sensitive · Family Systems · Interpersonal · Intervention · Multicultural · Person-Centered · Positive Psychology · Rational Emotive Behavior (REBT) · Solution Focused Brief (SFBT) · Strength-Based · Trauma Focused · Client-Centered Therapy · Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) · Grief Therapy · Solution Focused · Behavioral Activation · Child/Parent Psychotherapy.
My focus
As mentioned above, I enjoy working with adolescents, adults, couples, and families who present with any of the following issues: ADHD · Behavioral Issues with Coping Skills · Depression · Divorce · Family Conflict · Grief · Infidelity · Mood Disorders · Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum · Relationship Issues · School Issues · Self Esteem · Sexual Abuse · Stress · Trauma and PTSD · Women's Issues · Adolescents/Teens · Child Abuse or Neglect · Cultural Stress · Job Stress · Marital/Pre-marital · Older Adult
My communication style
I am told that I create an environment described as comfortable, trust-inviting, attentive, thought-provoking, encouraging, and understanding. I would like to work with someone like me!
My journey to mental healthcare
I understand that asking for help can be daunting, but to me, it is an act of strength to recognize and reach out for help when it's needed. We have all been in a place where a supportive ear or the knowledge that someone has your back has made all the difference. A little about me. I have been a clinical social worker for over 40 years. I have worked with children, teenagers, adults, families and couples. My experience has ranged from providing direct service, supervision, consultation, program development, community organizing, and lecturing on a variety of topics. I have trained teachers and social workers in Africa and I am most proud of being invited into student's homes to meet their families. I have lived in the Global South, formerly known as a "third-world country" for 3 years. My time there actually drove me to pursue social work as a career. One thing that I know to be true is that people all over the world have the same dreams for themselves and their children: they want a better life. I continue to be mindful of those lessons and incorporate them into my professional and personal life. I retired in May 2021 but continue to work part-time. I read an interesting book recently called "Retirement and Its Discontents" and gained more clarity about why I love working. I know I am lucky to love what I do after 44+ years.
My goals for you
Goals are based on the initial and ongoing assessment. Goals are made collaboratively through our partnership and reviewed regularly. Our goals are S.M.A.R.T: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. If indicated, we will revise, discontinue, or continue our goals, objectives, and/or strategies.
My first session with you
Following a thorough assessment and describing my approach, I ask the question: do you think we can work together? During this time, I also consider whether I can help. Depending on what we decide and when appropriate, I assign homework. This allows me to further assess the client's willingness, commitment to, and interest in therapy. I have been told that I am very direct and the homework I assign is practical, helpful, and relevant. I also have a good sense of humor.
