Congratulations on taking this first step toward becoming a healthier version of yourself and living the best life possible. My name is Janis Alexa Smith (I go by Alexa), LMFT and I understand that life is sometimes tough, and when you are trying to cope with anxiety, depression, heartbreak, and relationship struggles, this can feel overwhelming. In this season of life, you don’t have to be alone, and I can help you with those feelings because I am a therapist who has experience in helping others with what you may be facing right now. There is hope, and you can start your new journey for real and lasting change today.
My approach
My approach to your difficulties is one of non-judgment, empathy, respect, and understanding. We will work collaboratively in a flexible partnership to identify treatment goals and expectations, focusing on what matters to you most. My therapeutic approach stems from psychodynamic, person-centered, attachment, and family-systems styles, working to break the cycles you may be stuck in using insight, humor (when appropriate), and creativity. I am trained in various modalities because I believe that in therapy, there is no “one size fits all”, and as I will tell you, we can "snorkel" (deal with surface, every day problems, collaborating on practical solutions) or "scuba dive" ( getting down to the root of the problem). If no one has told you today, you are worth it. Things can get better. I encourage you to take that first step toward healing.
My focus
My experience includes having helped clients including ages from 4-80 who have experienced difficulties with mood disorders, self-esteem, divorce, trauma, PTSD, addictions, relapse prevention, parenting, family conflict, codependency and would like pre-marital counseling.
My communication style
My clients tell me that I am friendly, non-judgmental and welcoming. I like to say that You are the driver and I can be your GPS, I am without agenda, and I am only interested in you and what you need.
My journey to mental healthcare
I came to this profession by way of having a career in Family Law. When I saw the pain in couples and children as they entered into dissolution of relationships, I decided that I could better serve by getting in on the preventative side of treatment to possibly help prevent/navigate emotional damage.
My goals for you
I will collaborate with you on goal-setting during out first meeting. What matters to you, matters to me.
My first session with you
Our first session will be a time of collecting information so I can get to know you better, I also like to leave you with some practical application (coping skill) to help you in that week to come, and will give you my direct phone number so I can answer any other questions we may not have had time to address.
