My name is Rachel Carlson, I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in Orange County, CA, and working with clients statewide with telehealth. I work with adult individuals and I have a holistic approach that has allowed me to develop therapeutic strategies that are sensitive, effective, and tailored to the individual needs of each client.
My approach
I currently utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as well as mindfulness-based practices like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy while using a trauma-informed and strengths-based perspective. As an LCSW, I also recognize the influence of one's environment, encompassing both past experiences and current circumstances, on an individual's well-being and coping mechanisms. I value and respect cultural differences in the therapy space by integrating the knowledge I continue to learn in order to increase the quality of my practice.
My focus
I work with adult individuals experiencing trauma, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, life transitions, as well as relationship issues. I use motivational interviewing and a strengths-based approach in order to best serve my clients.
My communication style
I value bringing a compassionate and non-judgmental style of communication to the therapy space. Therapy is not always comfortable so it is essential for me to provide a safe and supportive environment in order to best help.
My journey to mental healthcare
I started my career as a medical social worker in Chicago, IL working in hospitals helping patients and their families in their most vulnerable moments to manage the healthcare system. As a social worker, my values around social justice, the inherent worth of a person, integrity, authenticity, and human connection have been essential guiding principles that have led me in my approach to clinical therapy.
My goals for you
I believe in a person-centered approach to goal setting which involves authentically and collaboratively working with clients. Over time we will establish goals that are best suited for you and your needs.
My first session with you
My primary goal in the first session is to establish a therapeutic connection and ensure that we are aligned in your therapy goals. I'd like to gain a deeper understanding of your current experiences and emotions and discuss any immediate stressors you may be facing. I'm also interested in starting to learn about your personal history and background, as it can provide valuable insights into our work.
