My approach
The most effective therapeutic approaches that I typically use in sessions are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solution Focused Therapy. CBT will allow me to help you identify negative thinking patterns so that we can shift those thoughts into more positive ways of thinking and behaving. Solution-focused techniques allow us to find solutions that will help you overcome whatever obstacle you are facing. Both techniques will empower you to become the best version of yourself and guide you toward a life filled with joy and peace!
My focus
I have over 20 years of experience working with clients, both young and mature, surrounding a variety of topics such as self-esteem, depression, divorce, relationship issues, anger management, peer issues, anxiety, and overall life difficulties.
My communication style
When working with me, you will never feel judged. Sessions are supportive, friendly, comfortable, and productive. Everyone experiences life difficulties from time to time. Allow me to help you navigate and problem-solve whatever is causing you stress, anger, anxiety, confusion, and sleepless nights. I’m here when you’re ready!
My journey to mental healthcare
I was born and raised in Washington, D.C. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of the District of Columbia, and my master's degree in Social Work from Howard University. I am currently pursuing a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from California Southern University. In addition to my private practice, I worked in a variety of settings ranging from foster care and adoption, school social work, international social work, and non-profit management. Fun fact...in 2018, I tapped into my God-given gifts in cosmetology and the beauty industry.... managing salons and spas and becoming a certified eyelash extensionist and makeup artist. Another fun fact about me is that I am a published author. In addition to my series of Pretty Guryl children's books, I am working on my first non-fiction/adult book titled, "Kissing Frogs but Praying for a Prince: How to Identify Mr. Wrong Within 24 Hours". In this book, I discuss the complexities of Christian dating, love, and possible marriage in an era filled with failed relationships and infidelity. I truly believe I have a lot of knowledge and wisdom to pass on, and I would love to help you become the best version of yourself. It absolutely makes sense to schedule an appointment today!
My goals for you
During our first few sessions, we will discuss goals and action steps to achieve your desired outcome. Goals change over time, so my best advice is to be patient, open-minded, and flexible when it comes to goal setting. As you grow and transform, you may discover that your initial goals will shift as well. The most important part of goal setting is to know that I am walking with you along this journey, and I am here to help you figure out what you want and need in life, and how to become the best version of yourself.
My first session with you
The first session is usually comprised of us getting to know each other. We will talk about situations that initiated the start of your therapeutic journey and goals that you would like to accomplish during our sessions. It's common to feel a bit nervous during the first session but trust me, you are in good hands. Clients rarely leave sessions feeling sad, or worse than they felt when they came in. Most of my clients describe our sessions as thought-provoking, authentic, and life-transforming.
