My name is Travis Schmidt and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the states of Hawaii and Idaho. I value everyone's experiences and really try to help process past events and work towards a more manageable future. I often utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Problem Solving Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. I have helped individuals and couples with trauma, addiction, childhood experiences, and faith-based therapy in my practice.
My approach
The main therapeutic approaches are cognitive theory, problem-solving therapy, and dialectical behavior theory. CBT is an intervention aimed at reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety. PST is a brief treatment for those experiencing depression and stress related to inefficient problem-solving skills. DBT is used mainly with interpersonal conflicts and is useful in treating mood disorders, suicidal ideation, and changing behavioral patterns.
My focus
I typically work with adults with various life experiences. Anxiety and depression are something that I am very comfortable with. I also have a passion for helping couples work on a wide range of relationship stressors.
My communication style
Clients often say that I am very easy to work with. I value honest and open communication throughout the process. I believe in treating people how I would want to be treated and this helps me connect with clients who often feel like they do not know where to start. I also mix clinical and lay terms and experiences to help facilitate communication.
My journey to mental healthcare
I was a Navy Corpsman for eight years. I had served with Marine Corps units, deployed to Iraq in 2006, and worked at the Naval Health Clinic in Annapolis. I really saw how mental health affected our service members, retirees, family members, and the community at large. I decided to obtain my Master of Social Work degree before I separated due to my experiences and seeing how marriages fell apart, individuals suffered from mental health symptoms, and because there were not enough therapists to help those in need. I currently work for the Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare for the past 11 years serving our nation's service members, veterans, and families.
My goals for you
Goal setting is essential to doing the work. Clients often communicate less stress and anxiety because they can concentrate on their treatment outcomes. I have also seen an increase in motivation to progress in therapy by setting Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals.
My first session with you
During the first session, clients can expect that I will go over the limits of confidentiality, consent for treatment, and answer any questions. I also like to discuss a little bit about crisis resources and clients' support system. Lastly, I like to get to know what is going on, duration of the presenting problem, and the severity of said problem.
