Aloha, My name is Mike Kukahiwa-Haruno and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor based on the beautiful island of Oahu. I work with individuals ages 5 to 25 and specialize in anxiety, stress, behavioral concerns, and LGBTQIA+. My inspiration for becoming a counselor is my wonderful siblings who taught me the importance of support which I hope to be for you.
My approach
My approach to therapy is based on the needs of the clients I work with however, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused, and Client-Centered Therapy, are the modalities I use most often. I believe that these modalities allow me to help support my clients on their therapeutic journeys toward their goals.
My focus
I found that my style works well with children and adolescents who may be dealing with life transitions, difficulties with peers, family, or schools, anxiety, stress, and lack of coping strategies. I have experience working with the LGBTQIA+ population and have found that my style is successful with this population due to my ability to relate to their experiences.
My communication style
During sessions, I listen attentively to my clients and match their energy. I can be calm for those who work well with that style or can be energetic and engaging. Just as therapy should be, I match what my clients need to have the best sessions possible. Whether calm or energetic, the communication will always be honest.
My journey to mental healthcare
Growing up and being the eldest of five children, I always loved supporting my siblings and their journeys. Their success made me happy. My hope is that I can make a similar impact on the clients I work with.

I believe in a team approach that is led by my clients. My clients give the direction and we go along the path toward reaching their goals together.
My first session with you
During our first session, I like to treat this like a "talk story" session where we get to know each other. We will touch on goals and set general goals to refine as we get to know each other. I also always allow time for my clients to ask any questions they may have.
