My name is Jake Joslin and I am a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) working with patients throughout Iowa via telehealth. My specialization is helping people with ADHD. I also have extensive experience supporting clients through their battles with depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, relationship challenges, and difficult changes or arguments that shake up life. I understand that life is hard and my passion is to help people break free from stigma and shame and feel empowered to overcome their trials.
My approach
My approach to therapy varies based on the patient's concerns, goals, needs, strengths, and interests. Every patient deserves an individualized counseling experience to best empower them. I primarily utilize solution-focused therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance commitment therapy, and emotionally focused therapy. My approach to counseling is flexible to meet clients where they are and provide them with the support that they need most.
My focus
People I work with are generally battling challenges with ADHD, depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship concerns, grief, and challenging circumstances or changes leaving them with painful adjustments. I work with clients ages 14 and up.
My communication style
A colleague once told me that I brought a feeling of peace into the room. When I work with someone I try to bring that same peaceful energy into the conversation. I help people feel heard and understood in a compassionate and supportive way. I want people to be able to share anything with me without feeling judged or stigmatized. My goal is to help people leave the session with a better understanding of their challenges and help them feel reassurance that they are not broken and do have a reason to hope.
My journey to mental healthcare
I first became interested in human behavior and development when I was a young child. I love trying to understand people and why they do the things that they do. This interest evolved into a desire to better understand how the trials of life impact people and what can be done to help people heal from the harsh wounds of this world. I completed my Master's in Social Work degree in 2011. Since then, I have worked in child protective services, hospice and home health, medical case management, and general mental health counseling. My passion is general mental health counseling and educating people about what they experience so that they can break free from the stigma and shame often associated with their trials and challenges.
My goals for you
I invite people to truly consider where they want to be in a week, a month, or even a year from now. We explore their values, passions, strengths, and interests. Then we discuss specific concerns and barriers that are keeping them from where they want to be. From here we can identify goals and supports that will be most beneficial to empower them toward those goals.
My first session with you
During our first session, a client is offered a brief explanation of what they can expect during counseling. During the first session, we would also discuss their primary reason for seeking support and identify possible goals about what they want from counseling. Then I invite them to share more about themselves including their interests, strengths, challenges, and needs. I enjoy getting to know people and what values and desires they have. This information will help direct the counseling experience and is the foundation for an individualized treatment plan.
