Hi there, I'm Cecelia!

Hi, my name is Cecelia Maier, born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than 25 years of experience, licensed through KY. I work with couples, individuals, LGBTQ and adolescents. My approach to therapy is to keep it simple and interesting, treating each Client with respect and dignity.

My approach

My approach to therapy varies based on the needs of the Client. I frequently use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) because it has been proven to be the most effective treatment for a multitude of mental health issues. I also use eclectic therapy, which is a mixture of many therapies mixed together. This, along with CBT, has helped my Clientele achieve success in relationships, work place and their daily lives. My recipe is: Half CBT & Eclectic Therapy and a "dash" of Humor = a happy and emotionally healthy person! I have found that my style and approach is a good fit for young adults, LGBTQ through senior citizens who are dealing with the challenges of a changing world, to include war, disease and a poor economy. This causes anxiety, depression, stress, anger, cutting and eating disorders, and suicidal ideation. I guide my Clients by showing them what tools they can choose to make their lives better, healthier and more manageable.

My focus

I work with a variety of populations, to include LGBTQ individuals/couples, active duty/retired military, mid-twenties to senior citizens. I work in areas of work-related issues, partner issues, empty-nest syndrome, ADD/ADHD issues, depression, anxiety and grief issues.

My communication style

My communication style is personable, caring, open, honest, non-judgmental, and using humor. I also use active and reflective listening. I will teach them how these techniques will let others know they are receiving the messages given to them. When effective communication skills are used, Clients are more satisfied and are more prone to actively participate/complete their treatment plans. This is a necessary part of giving the Client the confidence to be proactive in their treatment plan.

My journey to mental healthcare

Many years ago, I picked up a "Time Magazine" and splashed on the front cover was an article about "Domestic Violence." After reading the article, I was shocked that grown men and women would assault each other! I lived a sheltered life. I knew then what my calling was. I worked in domestic violence for 16 years. I want to help people by giving them the tools for a happier and safer life. And to help people with other issues, not just violence.

My goals for you

I approach goal setting with the Client by asking them to name 3 issues they need to resolve to make their life happier and manageable. Out of the 3 issues, I then ask them which of those issues is causing them the most problems. I also let the Client know that this could change once we are engaged in therapy, and the reason for this.

My first session with you

The first session with my Client is to talk about how they have been feeling and what brought them into therapy, what have they done to feel better, and to build rapport and trust. We will also discuss what their goals are, have they been in therapy, what worked, what didn't work, etc. I want to know what supports they have, are they active in their community, church, school, work, and so on. I also let the Client know I can best serve them by understanding their background, which plays a dominant role in making us "who we are" today.
