My name is Emily Tarby and I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor based in Columbia, Missouri working with clients from all over the state via telehealth. I like working with underrepresented populations and young adults, and specialize in anxiety, life transitions, relationship issues, career concerns, stress, and more! I primarily use Person-Centered, Cognitive Behavioral, and Acceptance & Commitment techniques to help clients reach their goals.
My approach
My therapeutic approach is integrative & eclectic. I draw from a range of theoretical perspectives to best meet the needs of each client. Along with CBT and ACT, I often incorporate elements of Mindfulness, Existentialism, Narrative, and Family Systems therapy and will use other theories and techniques when appropriate. This flexibility allows me to tailor my approach to each client's unique experience and encourage change in a way that works for them.
My focus
I have found that my therapeutic style works well with young adults who experience symptoms of Anxiety, PTSD, Bipolar, and Depressive Disorders. I enjoy working with clients who are motivated to understand and process their thoughts, feelings, behaviors, beliefs, and experiences, and want someone to help them through their healing process.
My communication style
I communicate with my clients in a caring and authentic manner, creating a safe and explorative space that feels relaxed yet thought-provoking. I strive to be gentle, while also providing challenge, honesty, guidance, and support. I like to create an open, non-judgmental space for you to explore with someone who likes to listen.
My goals for you
I approach goal-setting with clients by engaging in open and collaborative conversations. Together, we identify your desires and needs and create achievable goals and objectives to help get you where you want to be. I encourage clients to take small steps toward their goals while providing guidance and support along the way.
My first session with you
I like to take the first session easy. Starting therapy can be nerve-wracking for many so I like to start slowly by building rapport and getting to know each other to help reduce any anxieties. I’ll tell you a bit about my style and ask some questions to learn more about you & your history. If you’re ready to dive deep right away, that’s cool too! I’ll meet you at your comfort level.
