My name is Marissa Potter and I am a licensed clinical mental health counselor (LMHC) based in New York and working with individuals via telehealth. I work with adults and specialize in a wide range of focus areas; such as, but not limited to anxiety, stress, depression, and communication styles. Some therapeutic styles I use to address these areas are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy to help my clients through these challenging times and find growth in desired areas.
My approach
I use a range of evidence-based practices, based on each individuals needs. These practices include cognitive based therapy, solution-focused therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy. My main approach is client centered. I believe in working collaboratively with my clients to identified treatment priorities and create individualized therapeutic goals.
My focus
I have experience working with individuals who struggle with substance use, anxiety, depression, PTSD, relationship problems and everyday stressors. I have experience with couples and family counseling. From past family trauma to current as well as communication concerns and setting healthy boundaries.
My communication style
My goal is to create a safe, nonjudgmental environment where we can address personalized goals that help each individual achieve the change they are looking for. I use empathy and respect all boundaries a client may set. It can be difficult to feel comfortable when first starting counseling, so we work as a team and on the individuals pace to address their goals.
My journey to mental healthcare
Becoming a therapist has always been a passion of mine as this has allowed me to help others. I have always naturally been drawn to help others in difficult times and be a support they might need. I enjoy seeing others become the best versions of themselves and achieve goals they have set.
My goals for you
My approach with goal setting is working together with my client to identify what they want to achieve by coming to therapy. This can take time as trust needs to be built and each individual needs time to feel comfortable with being in therapy. With time, we will set goals and work on tracking the progress with reaching these set goals.
My first session with you
What you can expect in our first session together is for us to spend most of the time discussing how you've been feeling recently and what has brought you to therapy. This will allow me to ask questions to gain more insight on why you may be feeling this way and what type of therapy will best aid you in achieving your goals. This first session is made to build rapport and create a safe place. Each individual is different, this session allows me to gather important information to move forward in our therapy sessions.
