Hi there, I'm Akamin Victor!

Hi there, I'm Dr. Nkengaka, My name is Akamin Nkengaka and I earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Behavioral Health, a Master of Social Work (MSW), and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Rhode Island (RI) and a Licensed Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LAADC) in California. I am working with clients statewide via telehealth setting. I work with adolescents and adults and specialize in anxiety, stress, depression, using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Holistic approach to help my clients make progress and start feeling better.

My approach

My emphasis on therapeutic approach varies based on the needs of each client I work with. I most frequently use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Holistic approach in problem-solving, as both modalities help me and the client build a shared understanding of their reality, and allow us to work together to chart a path forward.

My focus

I emphasize a holistic approach because it is a good fit for a whole person's physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. They might use expressive arts, using dance, art, or music to work with people, or use mindfulness practices, including meditation and relaxation techniques. This often takes the form of anxiety, stress, and depression disorders. I work to help my clients navigate these transition periods.

My communication style

My communication style is calm, accommodating, and personable. I want my clients to feel comfortable talking with me about anything, and I pride myself on my ability to listen without judgment, and to help them to overcome their presenting challenges.

My journey to mental healthcare

What you can expect from our first session together is for us to spend the majority of our time talking about how you've been feeling recently, and me asking questions to better understand some of why you may be feeling that way. The first session is about us building an initial connection and helping me get a sense of where we should go from there. Each individual is different, and I like to listen first before assuming I know what will work best for you moving forward.

My goals for you

I decided to become a therapist because I have always wanted to help people. Whether it was a Counselor in mental health, substance misuse setting, volunteering in my community, or being a trusted and loyal friend, I have always naturally been drawn to helping people through difficult times. I enjoy seeing individuals become the best versions of themselves.

My first session with you

My approach to goal setting with clients is all about working together to define what you want to accomplish in our time together. This often starts by building trust between us, and getting comfortable with what it means to be in therapy. Over time, we will work together to set goals and track your progress.
