I began human service work in 1986 after receiving my Bachelor of Science degree in Counseling from the University of Montevallo, located in Montevallo, Alabama. I received my Master of Education in Counseling from the University of Montevallo in 1994. I became a Licensed Professional Counselor in 2001. I am currently licensed in Alabama and Georgia (inactive at present in Georgia) and am a board-certified supervisor for those wishing to become licensed counselors.
My approach
I focus on the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy so that my patient can change a negative pattern of thought that prevents joy. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is also utilized in therapy. Client-centered is always a must in therapy in my opinion. I think and have always thought that a Judeo-Christian perspective on counseling is best.
My focus
My services include Individual Counseling for adults, children, and adolescents. Common issues of my interest and expertise include, but are not limited to depression, anxiety, sleep, spiritual and behavioral, etc. I also have a strong background in working with foster care and adoption issues. A hurtful past cannot change, but moving through fear and hurt leads to acceptance, and then peace becomes evident.
My communication style
Gentle listening and thoughtful guidance are very important in therapy. A relaxed tone for therapy is important, and I will offer that in therapy. Assignments for growth will periodically be a part of the session.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have been involved with human services after high school graduation until the present time. I have worked in everything from summer camp to inpatient mental health. It has been important for me to work in an area that assists with emotional and spiritual growth, and that continues to be my goal today.
My goals for you
The client will be asked their reasons for therapy and will be asked to set two to three therapy goals after the initial assessment session.
My first session with you
Information gathering, clinical background, etc. will be included in the initial session.
