Hi there, I'm Valerie!

Hello there. I am a licensed therapist who is passionate about working with people who could really use some support in a non-judgmental atmosphere.

My approach

I try to have a gentle approach to therapy, but I also enjoy bringing humor and lightness to sessions. I will talk you through difficult issues as well which may feel a little tough at times. I believe that the client's needs guide treatment, so therapy will be tailored to you as an individual. I lean toward person-centered therapy techniques of genuineness and unconditional positive regard. I utilize techniques from many treatment modalities, primarily focusing on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).

My focus

I work with individuals, couples, minors (ages 13-17), preteens (ages 8-12), and children (ages 5-7). My specialties include addiction, adolescents/teens, anger management, behavioral issues, bipolar disorder, borderline personality, child abuse or neglect, coping skills, emotional disturbance, gender identity, LGBTQIA+ issues, mood disorders, older adults, oppositional defiance, peer relationships, relationship issues, self-esteem, self-harming, stress, suicidal ideation, transgender issues, trauma, and PTSD.

My communication style

What I will do consistently is be open and kind. I will also do my best to understand who you are and how I can help you face the challenges you're up against. I like to let the client take the lead during sessions, with your thoughts, feelings, and experiences driving the session, while I add in perspective, insight, and ideas where I can. I can be straightforward when I notice something that would be beneficial to address, but I always approach communication with kindness and good intentions.

My journey to mental healthcare

I was inspired to work in mental healthcare after receiving individual and group therapy for depression and trauma when I was a teenager. It was life-changing in many ways. I realized that being there for someone in their moment of need and offering them ideas for a way out of their current situation is the most important thing you can do for a person.

My goals for you

I want you to find the little tricks, skills, and strategies to help improve your life and your relationships. Once you find the right combination of communication skills, coping strategies, processing tools, social supports, routines, and life goals that make you feel like all of the puzzle pieces of your ideal life are coming together, we'll know you're exactly where you're meant to be.

My first session with you

After our initial intake session, I like to try to focus my energy on getting to know and understand you at the core of who you are. To help me understand you and your life, we'll explore your background and life circumstances, and we'll also discuss any recent events, difficult feelings, recurring thoughts, or issues that arise, and we'll figure out how we can make things a bit better, whether through coping strategies, processing your thoughts and feelings, developing a plan of action for next time, or whatever may be appropriate for your specific circumstances.
