Welcome! I'd like to introduce myself, my name is Heather Agid and I'm an LCSW in Connecticut. If you're tired of faking a smile to get through the day, or can't wait for bed as soon as you wake up, I want to help. I take a realistic, down to earth approach to highlight my client's strengths while understanding their difficulties; providing them with valuable tools to independently use for years to come.
My approach
I utilize a person-centered, strengths-based approach with a trauma-informed lens. My favorite modalities are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. I also have certification in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, as well as accreditation in The Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) and Circle of Security. I use a combination of therapies, theories and techniques to meet my client's unique needs and goals.
My focus
I have extensive experience working with children, adolescents and young to middle-aged adults. My primary history of treatment includes anxiety, depression, trauma and parenting. I have experience with individual, couples and family therapy.
My communication style
I pride myself in being an empathetic and caring yet direct and honest therapist. I want my clients to feel supported, rooted for and believed in, yet also challenged to go beyond what they're used to. In order to elicit long-term healthy change, I feel it is important to help my clients achieve higher levels of coping, functioning and communicating by teaching them lifelong skills and techniques to help with their symptoms.
My journey to mental healthcare
Ever since I was a young child, experiencing the divorce of my parents, I have made it a goal to become a therapist. I remember meeting a therapist for the first time as a young, scared and confused kid. My experience with this therapist was life changing, to the point where I was inspired to follow her footsteps. I am passionate about helping people celebrate their biggest wins and get through their darkest days. My favorite part about being a therapist is getting the amazing opportunity to walk alongside people while they heal and create a life they want to live - it truly is an honor and a beautiful process.
My goals for you
Goal setting is a collaborative effort. I enjoy teaming up with my client, more in a co-pilot role rather than a director. You are the expert in your life, your emotions and your experiences. I am here to help you clarify goals rather than 'tell you what to do.' I strive to be a steady base and support for you to bounce ideas off of, practice new skills with and process difficult emotions to. I will serve as a partner in your healing journey while you create your goals for treatment.
My first session with you
My first session is dedicated to learning about you and engaging in a low-pressure conversation. Finding a therapist is hard enough, I want you to feel comfortable when we meet - without pressure to spill your deepest secrets or do therapy the "right way." I often ask information-gathering questions about your history and past experiences, but am more than willing to wait to dive into details if that is more your speed.
