I am Dana E. Tatum LPC and my approach is to work with you to find the absolute best avenue toward your personal health and happiness. With this in mind, the most effective modality for positive change and growth will be an approach that is informed by our honest direct dialogue. I focus on how our decisions/cognition affect our behavior and vice versa. These realizations along with an emphasis and awareness on the moment we actually live within shapes and informs our work together.
My approach
I am highly experienced in Cognitive Behavioral therapeutic techniques, as well as developing the mindfulness of understanding the moment we live within and how that influences and informs our future.
My focus
I have typically worked with persons suffering from Depression, Anxiety, Maladaptive/Toxic relationships, Addictions, Anger Management, Behavior Modification needs, and Competitive Athletic Focus needs. I also work with Justice involved persons, and provide therapeutic care for First Responders including Crisis Intervention and Crisis Debriefing,
My communication style
Clients should expect to be listened to and heard without judgment. They should also expect to receive feedback that is never meant to label them but always meant to arm them with the evidence-based truth in their journey for health and peace.
My journey to mental healthcare
I began my career by chance. I was a screener for a 1st offender program in the Juvenile Detention House of Riker's Island Prison in NYC. I became clear that despite the charges faced and the outward expression of aggression that was presented by these juveniles their histories almost always included a lifetime of trauma and other unaddressed mental and emotional issues. Coming from a very rough environment myself I became interested in how one can grow and succeed despite their level of lived negative experiences. From that point, I set out to gain the education and experience to become a psychotherapist. I have spent over 32 years working within the justice system and the private sector as a therapist, crisis interventionist, hostage negotiator, and forensic psychological consultant to law enforcement.
My goals for you
Listening intently to your specific individual history and experiences and the current dynamics of your day-to-day living will determine what path to wellness will be most effective for you.
My first session with you
In our first session, I will seek to gain an understanding of what motivated you to take the sometimes difficult step of simply asking for help. The first session and maybe the first few sessions will be important as we learn about your needs and motivations and how to transcend those elements into a well-deserved healthy lifestyle.
