Thank you for checking out my biography. My name is Joseph "Keith" Brewton, and I am a fully licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 10 years of clinical experience. I believe in finding practical approaches to the problems that you have or currently are encountering. I also believe that you deserve to be told the truth, not just what I believe you want to hear about pacifying or flattering you. I believe it's important to move beyond the problematic thoughts or behaviors that are causing you problems or dysfunction in your life, your thoughts, or your relationships. Let's work together toward a better version of you!
My approach
I have always taken multiple different approaches therapeutically to come to the same result. The result is living a better life and being a better version of yourself. To accomplish this goal, I work mostly from a Cognitive Behavioral approach to therapy, focusing on the maladaptive thought processes that contribute to dysfunctional or unhealthy behaviors. I also believe experiential therapy is important as well, mainly focusing on how you feel about your experiences and why. Motivational interviewing is important to produce and encourage change, as is a Solution Focused approach to therapy, both of which I also incorporate into my therapy with you.
My focus
It's difficult to narrow down just one type of client or what type of people I have worked with for the past 10 years that I have been working in clinical therapy. As an Atlanta native, I am comfortable and familiar with working with a diverse clientele from diverse backgrounds with no limitations on what types of issues they encounter. I have spent the past seven years providing substance abuse and mental health therapy to federal inmates under the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons and federal probationers. I have also worked full-time with Veterans Affairs, providing trauma therapy to combat Veterans who struggle with PTSD. I do not want to limit what I have worked hard to achieve in my career, which, again, is a better version of yourself. It does not matter to me what your marital status is, your sexual preferences, your preferred gender or pronouns, your religious views, your political views, or your current problems. I've worked with individuals, families, couples, and marital relationships. I have a genuine passion for providing meaningful therapy, and I will work hard for you too!
My communication style
I believe in being genuine, caring, honest, ethical, direct, and helpful in my communication style with you.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have always enjoyed people. I've always gotten along well with almost anyone I interact with, and I've always enjoyed hearing about everyone's unique journey that helped them become the person they are. It's a passion of mine to understand the depth of each person I've gotten to know and to help them when they are struggling.
My goals for you
Goals should be direct, obtainable, clear, and achievable.
My first session with you
Our first session together is a great time for us to become acquainted with one another. This is your time to describe yourself and what is troubling you, and it is also a good time for you to ask any questions about me or what to expect from therapy.
