Hello, My name is Kevin Crabtree. I am a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in the state of GA. I have 17 years of experience working as a therapist in a variety of settings from at-risk children and families in rural areas, federal and state prisoners, the foster care and juvenile justice system, and military service members and their families.
My approach
My principal orientation is solution-focused and strengths-based. I like to use the therapeutic alliance to help clients identify and/or build the strengths and coping skills they need to help address whatever issues or challenges might have brought them into counseling.
My focus
For many years, I've worked mostly in a solution-focused model with clients who were struggling with adjustment issues of some kind. In the military, this often included moving or deployment/reintegration and the challenges this created in families/marriages and friendships. Mostly I'm comfortable helping clients address a particular challenge, although that looks different for everyone. This core issue manifests again and again.
My communication style
I have what I have been told is a warm and welcoming style. Many clients have commented on my voice being welcoming. I suppose I have a therapist's voice. Even working with maximum security prisoners I have always tried to carry compassion and wisdom into counseling sessions as much as possible. Even many hardened criminals found themselves able to soften their demeanor once they truly felt like they were being heard and not being judged.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have always wanted to be a therapist, which I know is a bit odd seeing as growing up I had never seen a therapist or really known anyone who had. I think my first exposure to therapy actually happened from Counselor Deanna Troi from Star Trek: The Next Generation: she was the ship's counselor and an alien from a planet where everyone was an empath and genuinely able to FEEL the feelings of other people. Something about that resonated with me. She had a profound positive and healing energy because so many people felt truly understood in her presence. There, I'm a huge nerd.
My goals for you
I like to help clients develop goals that are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-limited. I like to help clients develop clear goals and help them to find or build the skills/resources they might need to meet those goals.
My first session with you
During the first session, we will work on trying to figure out what "part of the universe" this client is in specifically. Are they a single parent raising five children? Are they struggling with depression after being laid off from a job? Are they struggling with body image issues? Every client is different and as such so are their goals/challenges/hopes and dreams. First I seek to understand. Then once we're on the same page we work to find a path forward from where they are to where they are hoping to be.
