Hi there, I'm April!

Hello, my name is Dr. April Stallworth, LPC. I am a 20+ year veteran clinician. My specialties include trauma, PTSD, anxiety/depression, family, marital/couples counseling, domestic violence, and non-trauma-focused anxiety. I also specialize in just listening and providing feedback for those who are still working through their wellness journey. I have learned that we may not always have a word for how we feel, but if something is impacting our feelings, then it's okay to get therapy to explore that.

My approach

My primary approaches are Cognitive/Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as well as Rational Emotive Therapy and Psychotherapy. I believe that getting to the foundation of the issues is the best start at changing negative or non-helpful patterns as we grow and change throughout our lifetime.

My focus

My areas of focus are trauma, domestic violence, toxic relationships, anxiety, relational, marriage/family/couples counseling, general life as it relates to anxiety/depression, women's issues, and men's issues.

My communication style

It is a given that some sessions may be challenging due to the sensitive nature of areas that may be highlighted at a given time. My goal is to develop a trusting and mutual rapport in order to keep sessions encouraging, focused, emotionally supportive, and productive. It is also important to infuse humor and moments of reality into sessions. I am direct, but not rude. The goal is not to waste time, but to help ensure that you achieve what you've set out to do.

My journey to mental healthcare

My journey towards becoming a clinician started with working with children who are differently abled. From there, I continued to expand my expertise in the area of trauma and recognizing trauma responses. I wanted to educate others (professionals, families, and clients) on truly understanding what they were experiencing as well as offer tangible, applicable tools to help them feel successful as they worked through, supported, or co-managed someone's emotional well-being. What keeps me doing this work is seeing the small victories become lifelong changes and watching people overcome areas that they thought were permanent.

My goals for you

When it comes to setting goals, I believe that although it may be a collaborative effort, it is important for the ultimate goals and intermediate steps to get there to belong to each client as an individual. There will be times when goals may be encouraged to be divided into easier, more achievable objectives, but they will always be met with support, respect, and sometimes reframing.

My first session with you

In the first session, my goal is to get through the super formal introductions in order to identify what is most comfortable in terms of communication and what level of support we should start with. It is also important to note that a journey starts with the first step. My goal is to encourage ongoing "step-taking".
