Aloha, my name is Dana Lucio. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with over 5 years of therapeutic experience in Hawaii. I am passionate about therapy and I typically alter my clinical approach based on individual needs. I do find additional passion in working with substance abuse, trauma, and emotional regulation. This provider resides in Hawaii.
My approach
As a clinician, I pride myself on getting to know my clients and their needs. I generally develop rapport with clients by utilizing a client-centered approach. By doing so, everyone feels safe, heard, and comfortable. Some common theoretical approaches that I like to use include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Trauma Informed Care.
My focus
I have a wide range of experience working with diverse ages and diagnoses. I have extended experience working with younger adults (14-24), working with substance use challenges, trauma, and anger management. While these are my most competent populations, I am confident in providing care for anyone who seeks self-improvement.
My communication style
With every client, I adjust my approach to match their needs. My goal is to create a safe space that allows each client to open up entirely with the hopes to address their needs/goals. I am an active listener, I provide clinical feedback and conduct check-ins to ensure proper understanding of individual needs. I have been told that clients feel comfortable, heard, supported, and safe when working with me.
My journey to mental healthcare
I served many years in the military, and with that, I worked alongside so many wonderful beings. I gained a special interest in learning more about diversity as I worked with a large/diverse population during my time in the Marine Corps. I began my educational journey with Social Science as my focus. While seeking that degree, I completed many classes that focused on psychology which really motivated me to earn a double major. Following that, I followed my passion and earned a Master at Hawaii Pacific University in clinical mental health counseling. Now, as a licensed mental health counselor, I am able to work with such an honorable population of individuals who want to focus on bettering themselves.
My goals for you
I utilize a client-centered approach. I include clients in the development of their treatment plans/goals. After all, therapy is not about my needs, it is about the needs/wants of the client.
My first session with you
During the first session, I typically introduce myself and encourage the client to introduce themselves. I review all intake documents and answer any questions from the onboarding process. And then I allow the client to address their reason(s) for seeking therapeutic support.
