My name is Kathleen Seelbach, and I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. I have been licensed for 23 years. I use an eclectic approach to counseling with an emphasis on building a solid relationship with clients. I believe all of us have innate strengths that allow us to grow and enhance our lives when we are provided with the right kind of support and assistance. I have strengths in working with trauma survivors, particularly those who have experienced sexual abuse and sexual assault. I also have a background in working with the LGBTQ+ community. I also have experience in child welfare, including foster care and adoption.
My approach
I believe the therapeutic relationship is vital to helping a client grow and develop healthy skills. Thus I focus on relationship building and making the client feel safe and comfortable in the counseling setting. I also use cognitive behavioral aspects in counseling and acceptance/commitment therapy. I believe mindfulness strategies are very helpful to most clients, and I like to incorporate them as well.
My focus
I feel my strengths are in working with people with mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. I also work with LGBTQ clientele, including those with gender identity concerns. I have a lot of experience working with people who have had sexual trauma in their lives and are experiencing difficulties related to their trauma.
My communication style
I try to establish a comfortable, safe, accepting, and completely nonjudgmental therapeutic environment for my clients. I want them to feel as comfortable as possible when sharing their issues and concerns. I also strive to create a sense of hopefulness and positivity that whatever their problems are, there are things they can learn to help improve their lives. I value my clients greatly, and I have great admiration and respect for their bravery in entering into counseling to make changes and better their lives.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have always wanted to work in the social services field and be a helper. Even as a teen, others sought me out for support and guidance. I was the one who friends came to when they were down or struggling with a problem. I was seen as trustworthy and always willing to provide emotional support. I enjoyed helping others and felt called to be a counselor as my career.
My goals for you
In the initial sessions, I work with clients to establish what they would like to change or improve in their lives, and from that, we can develop specific goals to work on toward making those changes. During the process of working on initial goals, there is an opportunity for adding or modifying goals as needed to ensure the client feels satisfied that they are effecting desired changes.
My first session with you
In the first session, I work diligently to establish a safe, comfortable, trusting setting. I like to get to know the client as much as possible, as it will help me work effectively with them. I also make sure all of their questions about counseling and working with me are answered.
