My name is Teresa Yu and I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and a Registered Art Therapist (ATR) in the State of Illinois. I work with adolescents and adults with a person-centered framework, tailoring my approach to client’s needs whether it be solution-focused skill building, talk-based processing, or activity-inspired Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I specialized in working with culturally diverse, BIPOC population focusing on acculturation stress, life transitions, and family separation. I am fluent in Mandarin.
My approach
I recognize one approach does not fit all. I like to explore a working balance where you feel engaged while being challenged towards your identified goals. Depending on client’s needs, I frequently utilize Attachment, Regulation, Competency framework, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused processing, mindfulness, therapeutic, or art activities in my sessions.
My focus
I work with a diverse population primarily with adolescents and young adults experiencing anxiety, uncertainty, low self-esteem, social exclusion, and stress. I like to remain flexible and open in our space to explore different topics you feel safe to share at different points of our therapeutic relationship.
My communication style
I am often described to have a calm, caring personality with moments of humor. I like to listen empathetically, clarify and summarize, before inviting processing. My goal is to hold a therapeutic space where you feel engaged to share what’s on your mind from your daily experiences to your concerns without feeling judged.
My goals for you
I believe in structure and consistency! Let's decide together what is reasonable, manageable, and achievable. I am here to hold you accountable but also support you through obstacles and challenges along the way.
My first session with you
I would like to know what motivates you to our space and learn more about you. As we begin to connect, I like to invite discussions around expectations to explore my supportive role and set the right pace to your healing journey. I believe establishing a sense of safety and trust is fundamental to our work together.
