Hi there, I'm Marla!

Hi! I'm Marla Nelson, and I'm a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. I believe the counseling relationship is a cooperative partnership between you and me. It's your session. I am flexible in my counseling process, depending on your needs and preferences. I use many therapeutic modalities with clients that have proven very effective. I look forward to meeting you!

My approach

I use a person-centered approach to establish a rapport and incorporate many counseling tools, including CBT, ACT, mindfulness, REBT, Grief work, Focused Solution techniques, and trauma-informed care.

My focus

I treat adults, teens, and pre-teens for depression, anxiety, grief, adjustment disorders, stage-of-life difficulties, trauma, social skills, career counseling, and substance use disorders.

My communication style

I like to maintain a comfortable and casual communication style and feel it is important that I partner with clients in making choices for their counseling journey. My current and former clients have felt comfortable discussing additional interventions they want to incorporate. Clients know that our sessions are a safe place to talk about anything.

My journey to mental healthcare

Growing up, I watched some family members struggle with their mental health and developed empathy for people who struggled privately. Simply put, I believe that it is the most important work, and I feel privileged to get to help others through recovery.

My goals for you

Clients ALWAYS set their own goals. I can help them decide, but ultimately it is YOUR goal.

My first session with you

I like to assess clients in the first session, so I get a good picture of their concerns. I do have some standard questions that I ask, but if a client needs to talk about their current circumstances, that is what will happen in the first session. I always trust the process and do what is best for the client.
