Hi there, I'm Barry!

I am a licensed clinical counselor who believes that everyone has to be the force of change they want to be. I look forward to working with anybody who wants to learn about themselves in a safe environment free from judgment. I specialize in working with people dealing with substance use, with or without mental health issues. I have a background in working with people both inpatient and outpatient, the homeless population, and people in the justice system. I also address career concerns, stress over life decisions, relationships, boundaries, and healthy habits for overall wellness. I want to help you achieve your goals whether you have an idea of what they are or just want to learn about them as we go through this journey together.

My approach

My style is primarily based on motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and strengths-based models.

My focus

I work well with people who are open with me as they are with themselves. We can walk this journey together and building trust is the first time on that journey.

My communication style

I am generally frank and open with my client. My emphasis is hearing what you have to say and will ask you further questions here and there but hearing you out first helps me understand you better and help you better.

My journey to mental healthcare

Wanting to understand people drew me to therapy. Learning about how people navigate through life and walking with them through this journey was something that made me realize that this is the career I want. I have a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology and am a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC).

My goals for you

Any goals we set are not permanent and just as life evolves, our goals evolve with time. Successful care is going to be a continued conversation that either you or I can initiate, if either of us feels sufficient progress we can talk about ending therapy.

My first session with you

My first sessions are usually more informational when I hear you out on what issues prompted you to reach out and some background information. I might suggest some tips on how to take care of yourself a little better so that we can use that as a foundation to talk deeper about what we want to work on.
