Hi! My name is Jessica Surges and I am a licensed clinical social worker. I tend to use patient and solution-focused CBT modalities to help my clients overcome obstacles and manage everyday life stress.
My approach
I believe that everyone should have that person in their life who will listen intently and empathically when needed. Someone who will meet you at the moment, sit with you in the hardship and help you navigate the tangled webs. I believe everyone has the power over negative thinking and I enjoy helping my clients recognize those negative thoughts and behaviors in order to cope and make positive changes.
My focus
I have found that all people, despite our differences, experience some form of stress or anxiety at some point in life. It could stem from grief and loss, trauma, pivotal life changes, questioning decisions, or just feeling overwhelmed, depressed, and burnt out. I am confident in my ability to unpack and address these issues to help my clients lead happy and fulfilled lives.
My communication style
I am a very laid-back, approachable, down-to-earth person. I am non-judgmental, humorous, and do my best to make my clients feel comfortable. When working with me, don't expect a sterile "read from the book" session. Come as you are and let's work together.
My journey to mental healthcare
My own trauma and grief brought me to this field. I walked with my mother's hospice social worker through the darkest depths of pain and despair. I could not have navigated through without her supportive presence and guidance. She taught me so much about myself, my anxieties, self-destructive thinking, unhealthy coping habits, and how to turn them around. She taught me how to feel in control when I felt powerless. I can't think of a better way to make meaning out of such a tough time than to help others tangled up in darkness.
My goals for you
I feel it's best to have both short and long term goals. It's great to have an endgame but it's also important to celebrate small steps. They all add up! This helps reduce frustration and boosts determination.
My first session with you
The first session often feels like speed dating. I want to know what brought you to me and you want to know if we're a good fit. I'll ask some guided questions and give you space to share your journey and see how we can best work as a team to help you meet your goals.
