Hi! My name is Lori Brinkley, and I'm so glad that you're here. I live and work in Wilmington NC. I consider myself fortunate to spend time in such a beautiful place! The work I do with my clients is challenging, at times, and I believe it needs to be infused with humor - so laughing is a big part of who I am. My approach is warm but direct. I love working with new moms, women in transitional phases of life (divorce, starting a new business, college, new career, new relationship) and people experiencing depression or anxiety. I also do "couple's counseling for one" and help clients make significant changes in their relationships by learning effective communication skills and recognizing unhealthy patterns.
My approach
I tend to pull a lot of skill-building from Cognitive Behavioral and Dialectical Behavior therapies. I also use Strengths Based and mindfulness in our work together.
My focus
I love working with women in transition (new moms, recently separated, starting a new career or relationship, opening a business or beginning college). Change is exciting and scary - it can overwhelm you. I love helping women develop new skills to cope and embrace the beauty, discomfort (and everything in between) that life has to offer.
My communication style
I have a warm and nurturing style, yet I am comfortable confronting difficult topics and challenging clients - I understand that you can only push as much as you support! I have a laid-back personality and aim to create an environment of comfort and safety. The work we do will require a level of vulnerability and, together, we will create the safety and trust that is required for vulnerability and healing.
My journey to mental healthcare
I didn't always know that I would be a counselor. I initially thought I'd be a Pediatrician and then later studied to be a teacher for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. but I was always the one that others came to talk about things. In my freshman year, I took Psych 101 and the professor was amazing and engaging and I was enthralled with the subject! I couldn't get enough. I changed my major, to get my BA in Psychology. I went on to get my MSW and have completed coursework toward a Ph.D. in Human Sexuality.
My goals for you
Goal setting is established in our first session. We will identify 2 or 3 overarching goals and break them down into manageable action steps. Our session and homework will revolve around those goals and action steps.
My first session with you
During the first session, we are getting to know each other. I will ask lots of questions about many areas of your life. This helps me get a complete picture of the things impacting you both positively and negatively. I will make notes and we will establish your goals. We will decide if we are a good fit for accomplishing those goals and schedule future appointments if we are. You will leave with homework because so much of your growth will happen in between our sessions by practicing skills and prioritizing your wellness.
