Hi there, I'm Stephen!

I was born and raised in New York City and received my MSW from Hunter College School of Social Work. Since moving to Asheville, NC soon after graduating, I have worked in many capacities, including as Clinical Director of a large residential facility, among other supervisory roles. Over the years, I have become convinced that real change is usually the result of a truly holistic approach and that certain understandings of modern neuroscience can be very helpful in the process of real, lasting change.

My approach

I employ an eclectic approach, with an emphasis on creating connection and then blending in whatever approaches seem most useful for the individual client. Often the approach can include elements of mindfulness training, and cognitive techniques from several different therapeutic schools. I have worked most intensively with people struggling with the effects of trauma, but over the years have worked with countless people experiencing depression, anxiety, compulsive and obsessive thinking patterns, and many other challenges.

My focus

I most enjoy working with people who are motivated to change and willing to try different approaches to effect that change. Having worked closely with neuroscientists and other cutting-edge scientists and clinicians, I am often able to use some of that knowledge and experience to help people with specific challenges in ways that leverage emerging scientific understandings.

My communication style

I make every effort to have a calm, compassionate, interested, and attentive listening style. Good communication is the absolute cornerstone of the therapy process.

My journey to mental healthcare

I first thought about becoming a therapist after I had a transformative experience on a long-term, silent meditation retreat. I was struggling at the time, and seeing that real change is possible was a real eye-opener. Subsequently, I enrolled and Hunter College School of Social Work in NYC received my MSW in 2006, and have received many subsequent professional trainings, many oriented around emerging neuroscientific understandings.

My goals for you

I always work with clients to create goals and benchmarks so that they can know whether the process is successful. This is unique for every person I see.

My first session with you

The first session is when I start to get to know clients. Some bookkeeping stuff is usually necessary, but it's also a chance to talk about goals and discuss questions and possible concerns. I generally tell clients that if for whatever reason they don't feel good about the first session, "move on!" This is your process and you should feel very comfortable with whoever you decide to share it with.
