Hello, my name is Paul Heft. I am an Independent Mental Health Practitioner which means I treat a variety of mental disorders varying in severity from the stresses of daily life to mood disorders and psychosis. Whatever part of the spectrum you fall on, I focus on the whole person, body and mind.
My approach
Some issues lend better to certain approaches, as do individuals. Some people benefit from more short-term, solution focused approaches. Other times a behavioral shift is needed. We neglect the unconscious parts of ourselves, and these forces often guide our choices without even knowing it. I also believe in approaches that value the present moment and how we can grow in the here and now.
My focus
I work with everyone but find special connection with the LGBT community, relationships and severe mental illness.
My communication style
I value being direct in the moment, which I believe also values the client's time. I make sure not to push certain approaches when it is clearly not matching the client's inner experience. I also enjoy interpersonal work which examines how we experience ourselves in others.
My journey to mental healthcare
I always was the listener for my friends my whole life. At the same time I began taking psychology classes in high school and throughout college. It seemed only logical to combine the two. I believe people can use therapy even on their best day.
My goals for you
Goals are something I will check in on throughout each session. Goals change as does life between sessions. I seek to find measurable and realistic goals in collaboration with the client.
My first session with you
The first session involves exploration of your goals, identity and current blockades you face in life. I will screen for symptoms of mental illness. I believe the body and mind are inseparable, so we will assess those areas of wellness too.
