Hi there, I'm Yara!

My name is Yara Adam-Whiter, and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) based in Brooklyn, New York, working with clients statewide via telehealth. I work mostly from a person-centered approach to understand your worldview so that we can achieve progress toward your unique therapy goals.

My approach

My approach to therapy varies based on the needs of each person. I tend to draw on ideas and approaches from a variety of schools of thought and sources. My counseling competencies include multicultural sensitivities, LGBTQIA2S+ affirmative care, and developmentally appropriate and trauma-informed care. I work most frequently with Person-Centered therapy and bring in tools from Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Motivational Interviewing and Expressive Art Therapy. These modalities will help us build a shared understanding of your worldview and allow us to work together to chart a path forward.

My focus

I enjoy working with LGBTQIA2S+ individuals and their families. I may also be a good fit for clients for first-generation and immigrant clients. We can work on understanding how your intersectionality forms your ideas about the world and the challenges you deal with navigating different cultural expectations in different situations. Areas of expertise include PTSD, anxiety, depression, addiction, and stress. I work with you to navigate transition periods and to build skills to help you feel better about yourself and develop a more positive outlook on life.

My communication style

My communication style is animated, empathetic, open, and honest. I like to create a collaborative environment where you are the expert on you, with me walking alongside on your journey. I pride myself on my ability to actively listen without judgment in the hopes that you feel comfortable talking to me about anything.

My journey to mental healthcare

What you can expect from our first session together is for us to spend the majority of our time talking about how you’ve been feeling recently and for me to ask questions to understand better some of why you may be feeling that way. The first session is about us building an initial connection and helping me get a sense of where we should go from there. Each individual is different, and I like to listen first before assuming I know what will work best for you moving forward.

My goals for you

My approach to goal setting with clients is all about working together to define what you want to accomplish in our time together. This often starts by building trust between us, and getting comfortable with what it means to be in therapy. Over time, we’ll work together to set goals and track your progress.
