My name is Nancy Clark and I am a Licenced Clinical Social Worker (LSCW-R) accepting new patients in New York State via telehealth. I have 14 years of outpatient counseling experience and I work with a variety of ages from adolescents to adults. I offer a gentle, non-judgemental approach to exploring symptoms, life challenges and barriers to mental health wellness.
My approach
I have been trained in various treatment strategies including but not limited to Strengths Based Counseling, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy and Trauma Focused Wellness practices. It is important for me to find a good fit between your needs and a treatment strategy that will be effective and meets your specific needs.
My focus
I enjoy working with a mix of various age groups. I have extensive experience working with adolescents and young adults. I am comfortable treating panic and anxiety symptoms, depression, substance abuse, codependency, family conflict, survivors of childhood/adult trauma and domestic violence. I also have experience with people who identify as neurodivergent as well as people who are exploring their identity.
My communication style
I have been told that my therapuetic style helps put patients at ease. I am direct in my communication while being gentle and using humor. I honor that it may feel like taking a risk to share your past experiences, as well as thoughts and feelings with me. It is my goal to create a safe space that allows people to be honest and open about themselves. I respect that therapy is work and making change is hard. It is my job to help you let down your defenses as well as construct sessions that you will look forward to attending.
My journey to mental healthcare
I feel fortunate to be a part of helping people grow and make changes in their lives. I am inspired by my clients' resilience and dedicated to helping others heal. I obtained a bachelor's degree studying anthropology/psychology and worked for several years in human services before identifying that therapy was the career path for me. I am driven to continue to learn strategies to become a better therapist as well as a better human being.
My goals for you
As a counselor I empower my clients to identify goals that are meaningful to them. We will work collaboratively to develop reasonable goals and prioritize them as they pertain to your values. It is important that goals be realistic and achievable. I will also make an effort to assist you to notice and acknowledge evidence of your hard work and progress, as well as barriers that keep you stuck.
My first session with you
In our first session we will explore the symptoms and challenges that have led you to seek therapeutic support. We will explore past attempts to address these issues, what has worked and what did not seem helpful. We will identify your personal strengths and support network that have helped you to survive and endure. As therapy progresses I hope we will not only find strategies to reduce the interference of symptoms in your daily life but also help you connect with others and with a life that feels more meaningful.
