Hi there, I'm Cindy!

My name is Cindy Carino and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in New York State. My therapeutic approach is a strength-based, solution-focused, empathetic/non-judgmental, and unconditionally supportive one. My experience consists of couples therapy, family therapy, individual therapy, home-based therapy, trauma-focused, and play therapy.

My approach

My therapeutic approach is a strength-based, solution-focused, empathetic/non-judgmental, and unconditionally supportive one. The theoretical approaches I often use are SFBT, CBT, EFT, Marital Therapy, Gottman Couples Therapy, Play-Therapy, Structural Family Therapy, and Strategic Family Therapy. However, I am open to using other modalities to meet my clients' needs.

My focus

I work with individuals, families, and couples. The conditions I am most comfortable treating are depression, trauma, PTSD, self-esteem, anger, impulsivity, and grief.

My communication style

I use a non-judgmental and supportive tone while in sessions. I often use humor as needed as well to create a more comfortable environment. I believe that working with me feels safe as I also believe in using disclosure whenever necessary so my clients feel even more supported/validated in their experiences.

My journey to mental healthcare

I initially became a therapist while getting my Associate's in Business Management. I took an elective MFT class and my professor informed me that that was a career as he saw I was very enthusiastic in class. I then decided to pursue a career in MFT. I remember that as a teenager I had a therapist who was an MFT, and to this day, that woman is someone I always remember with deep fondness and appreciation. Unfortunately, I have a trauma history and I believe that that also drives me to do this type of work. I want to be a support to others as I remember that there were many times in my life when I did not have that.

My goals for you

I approach goal setting in a mutual way. I ask for my client to come up with goals for themselves and whenever they either struggle to come up with goals or are unsure, that is when I offer suggestions. I want my clients to feel in control of their treatment planning.

My first session with you

That I will be approachable, validating, supportive and insightful.
