My name is Mark Chaney, LPC. I provide counseling and counseling-related services for children, adolescents, adults, and families together. I have 15 years of accumulative training and experience in the fields of mental health, trauma, domestic violence, foster care and adoption. I use an integrated model that builds upon an individuals existing beliefs, strategies and virtues.
My approach
I am a lifelong student of Philosophy and have a strong basis in Existential Psychotherapy. I am also skilled in Narrative psychotherapy, Internal Family Systems, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. I have found that integrating these specific leading therapeutic models as most effective in meeting a variety of needs.
My focus
I work with individuals and families experiencing a wide array of presenting concerns. Some clients I see are experiencing short-term stressors while others are experiencing longer-term mental health disturbances. For individual therapy, I generally treat adults and adolescents ages 12 and older. For children younger than 12, or for adolescents otherwise not appropriate for telehealth, It may be recommended to address concerns in the form of family therapy. As my current openings are for telehealth only, appropriateness for this setting is a primary component of current client focus.
My communication style
Therapy sessions entail a reverential and invitational tone. Clients indicate experiencing a safe, supportive, non-judgmental environment.
My journey to mental healthcare
Psychotherapy emerged as a path for me in my 20s. In adolescence I experienced grief and loss, the benefit of psychotherapy, and a budding love of psychology and philosophy. I also found relief in expressive arts, painting, sculpture, music and reading. I studied art, science, psychology and philosophy with greater and greater diligence, and I was afforded the privileges of access to education and to supportive people in my life that encouraged these pursuits. I'm very grateful that these factors lead to an alignment of calling and vocation. I'm passionate about psychotherapy as I've seen countless individuals and families unlock the resources they needed to stabilize and grow.
My goals for you
Goal setting is a collaborative and ongoing process. There will be discussions of the aims of successful therapy completion discussed throughout an episode of treatment, at intake, during regular intervals across a course of treatment, and at discharge.
My first session with you
Clients should expect a first session to include discussions of privacy, expectations of treatment, and warm information gathering, as an assessment of symptoms and needs. We will then go over recommendations as a plan of care and will seek to establish initial agreed-upon therapy goals based on the unique factors leading to treatment.
