I am a Marriage and Family Therapist and Chemical Dependency Counselor. I am very straightforward in my approach. I will never lie to you and will tell you the facts honestly and without sugarcoating.
My approach
I like to follow a path knowing the start point and the hoped-for endpoint. The path between each is different for each person. I am your guide along the way.
My focus
I am a firm supporter of everyone. People are people regardless of the label they choose, or the one society puts on them. It doesn't matter to me who you love, what you look like, or how you function in life. You are a person that is struggling, and I am here to help.
My communication style
I am very straightforward and don't sugarcoat. This does not mean that I am harsh and uncaring. I don't yell and expect the same respect in turn. I will listen fully with love and kindness. I will speak to you with kindness as well. Sometimes hearing the truth can be painful, but it will not be presented in a hurtful manner.
My journey to mental healthcare
I started as a kid wanting to be a teacher. Throughout my life and various experiences in colleges, the military, and jobs, I was more often than not put in the position of mom and therapist. Everyone knew they could come to me for true support and feedback. I finished my BS in History with Secondary Education, but after student teaching, I realized that as a teacher, my hands were tied, and I wanted to help students more. I then began my Master's program in counseling. Literally, this is what I am meant to do. The saying that if you enjoy your work, you will never work a day in your life is true for me.
My goals for you
Like I said before, each path is individual. Your progress will be based on your needs. We will check in weekly to see where you think you are based on the goals we set together. I use scaling a lot. For example, since you came in, how bad is your anxiety on a scale of 0-10. That will help color your progress. Also, this is based on your perception, not just my own.
My first session with you
A first session would include getting to know me, telling you a little about who I am, and how I "therapy." I would also get to know you and some basic background. Finally, the big question is, What is going on? And Why now?
