My journey to mental healthcare
As a young adult, I was lost in a career I did not enjoy so I spent time exploring what I wanted to do with my life and career. A friend suggested I try volunteering at a Youth at Risk Program in Dallas. There I had the experience of working with inner-city teenagers who were finding themselves lost and struggling with many different traumas in life. That is when I found my new career in helping others work through trauma, life, and substance abuse issues. I pursued my education further and graduated from the University of Texas Arlington with my master's Degree in Social Work, in August of 1998. Out of Graduate school, I took a job as a contract Social Worker with the Department of Defense working in Wuerzburg Germany with 1st Infantry Division Headquarters for 3 years. My passion for working in the field of trauma led me back to working with a Specialty Trauma Unit for severe emotional, spiritual, sexual, and physical trauma which served clients from across the USA. In 2011, I began working for the United States Military once again in the Army Substance Abuse Program where we were enlisted to not only screen for alcohol and substance abuse but to also evaluate for trauma and suicidal thoughts as many of these soldiers were returning from War. This led to a focus on treating trauma clients, substance abuse, and dual diagnosis.
My goals for you
My goal is to understand a client’s life experiences. My guiding principles are the rebuilding of a sense of safety, and recognition of your own resilience, and power. Recovery can mean freedom from the debilitating effects of post-traumatic experiences.
My first session with you
The first sessions are about identifying the needs of the Client in their own words. The completing of assessments and getting background and history related to their reasons for seeking treatment. This helps me better understand how I can assist in providing the most productive results.
