Hello, my name is Deidre Lawrence and I have a master's degree in counseling and an LPC license. I have been in practice since 1994. I use a form of cognitive behavioral therapy, positive psychology, and mindfulness tools. I have been certified in anger management, and treating anxiety and trauma. Recently in my practice, I have enjoyed working with relationship issues and symptoms of trauma and helping people move forward finding some peace and calm in their lives. During my time as a therapist, I have specialized in using play therapy, filial therapy, and working with children and adults with impulse issues. Also, I am a supervisor of counselors and provided training working with stress reduction, relationship issues including communication classes, parenting issues, training foster parents, and the reduction of anxiety. I also have used music and art therapy while helping people reach success.
My approach
Doing therapy with me depending on the client's goals I initially use educating them in ways to feel relief quickly using healthy coping skills and mindfulness. Also, I use rational emotive therapy and reality therapy including some positive psychology. While working with symptoms of trauma I help them go through the process of trauma therapy. If possible I will sometimes use existential therapy to help them understand and maintain their forward movement.
My focus
Due to being in practice for a long period, I am comfortable working with most clients. The areas I have concentrated on recently are anxiety, stress reduction, couples issues, and trauma. I also enjoy working with impulse control disorder issues and have a history of working with people with depression or bipolar disorder. In addition, I have done group work and individual work with people who have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder with much success.
My communication style
The tone or environment Is accepting and non-judgmental. This is a safe place to express yourself. There is a possibility there will be some confrontation at some point in the therapy due to lasting change can sometimes feel uncomfortable. Even the confrontations are done with respect and caring.
My journey to mental healthcare
Of course, I enjoy people and as you often hear from this area of expertise I do care about people and find joy in seeing seeing them move forward and heal. I also think it appeals to me due to there are so many variables and sometimes even often there is more than one solution. This career is very wide and interesting because of the different fields you can specialize in but also due to the unique qualities of every individual that is met during the journey of being a therapist.
My goals for you
The counseling process should be led by the client and by the goals they want to reach.
My first session with you
During an initial session with a client, I would like to get to know them and understand what brought them to therapy and the individual symptoms that are causing them the most pain. The plan is for them to leave the session with at least a few tools to help them feel some relief and provide them with some education related to how their goals can be met.
