HI, I'm Karla Ayers, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I am glad that you have decided to take the first step toward therapy. I am certain that you can improve areas of your life through therapy and I will be with you every step of the way with the needed information, support, and encouragement it takes in this journey.
My approach
My approach is Solution-focused. I work with you to help you find answers to the issues that are causing difficulty, no matter how large or small they seem. I will provide you with an open-minded and supportive setting while giving you positive boundaries in which to improve your well-being and life circumstances.
My focus
I have experience working with all ages and backgrounds of clients. I have experience in helping with depression, anxiety, ADHD, childhood trauma and neglect, adjustments to life circumstances, stress, school and workplace issues, and chronic health issues.
My communication style
In working with clients, I want you to feel like you can freely engage in discussions, ask questions, and most of all be honest about whatever may be happening in your life. I want you to feel comfortable and relaxed in the therapy setting to truly express what is on your mind. My goal is for therapy to be beneficial and to provide space to ask questions, express yourself, and be comfortable enough to engage in the process.
My journey to mental healthcare
My career as a therapist began long before college when I would work with kids and youth while I was a teen. It seems that we all want to be heard but there is not always a space for us to be heard. Many of us mature into adulthood without feeling validated and that our emotions/voices are negated or insignificant to others. I want everyone to have the ability to express themselves and grow emotionally in a healthy, positive way.
My goals for you
I approach goal setting as a team effort. You may come into therapy having a general idea of what you want to accomplish but have no idea where to begin. That's where I am able to come in and help you make sense of the process and break it down into smaller, more manageable, less overwhelming steps. Together we will set goals, monitor your progress, and change them as needed over the course of your journey.
My first session with you
During the first visit with me, a client can expect a brief introduction of myself as well as a chance to ask any questions or voice concerns about the process. After this, we will get started with the discussion of what brought you to therapy and what you hope to get out of it. From here, we will be able to pinpoint what aspects of your life you want to change or improve, as well as begin to set goals for change. I often do ask clients to do "homework", if you are willing, but this will be unique to you and your situation.
