I want to start off by saying kudos to you for putting yourself out here and looking for a therapist. Starting can be one of the hardest steps. My name is Maggie, and I am a licensed clinical social worker. I received my Bachelor of Psychology and Human Development from Virginia Tech and my Master of Social Work from VCU. I started my career and have extensive experience in hospital social work. During my time in the hospital, I was able to see how all aspects of our lives are connected. Our health, families, relationships, work/education, etc., are deeply rooted in one another. While this idea may sound intimidating, my goal is to show you how it can also bring about hope and change. I like to use a collaborative, strengths-based, holistic approach in my practice. I base many of my approaches on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy and Narrative Therapy. This simply means I focus on you. We learn together your strengths and how you can use them in new ways. We consider if we are taking in the full picture by helping draw 'road maps' that will provide a better understanding of your past and goals for your future. I will challenge you to view yourself and others in new ways. I will encourage you to try new things. And yes, sometimes I will give you homework. I am happy to chat to learn if we are a good fit for each other. If we are not, hopefully, I can help you find someone who is. Finding your therapist is like Goldie Locks looking for the right chair. It just doesn't feel right until you find a good fit. Let's learn if I am a good fit for you.
My approach
The main modalities I use in my practice are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Solution Focused Brief Therapy. I do all of this through a trauma-informed lens. I work with many different individuals with differing conditions. The main concerns I work with are depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, grief, stress, and life transitions.
My focus
My ideal working relationship with a client is that of partnership and collaboration. I will ask you to challenge yourself in new ways and try new things. You are the expert on this, and I highly value your expertise. I ask for open, honest communication, and I will give the same.
My communication style
A big part of my job is to listen. I will actively listen to your concerns and confirm with you that I understand you correctly. I try to bring about a sense of calmness and ease in my sessions. My goal is to give you a safe space that allows you to speak freely.
