Hi there, I'm Robert!

My name is Robert Phillips. I hold an LPC license from the state of Virginia and am a Certified Substance Abuse Professional with CSAC - A certificate. My approach is to build a strong therapeutic relationship, stay focused on the client in the present moment without judgment, help people gain skills and tools for managing complicated situations, and encourage a spirit of openness, curiosity, and acceptance to help individuals understand they can choose to respond rationally and control behaviors.

My approach

I employ an integrated model that involves the personal characteristics, external systems that often reinforce ongoing problems. I apply CBT with the idea that mental health disorders are maintained by internal processes as irrational maladaptive thoughts and unhealthy emotional responses that need to be altered. Psychodynamic examines the whole system including the family dynamic, work environment, extended relationships scattered through the community. Reality Therapy helps clients to respond responsibility to establish greater control over their lives while enhancing the ability to build meaningful and effective relationships.

My focus

My experiences are with adults suffering with substance use, anxiety disorders, bipolar, schizophrenia disorders, anger issues, children and adults suffering from ADHD, autism spectrum. My experiences with family systems are with blended families, adoption issues, legal issues with CPS, court, probation, reintegration post release from incarceration, facilitating groups for those involved in the courts.

My communication style

I find most effective ways to help people feel comfortable with therapy is a welcoming attitude with a curiosity about their experiences that have brought the person into the session. Clients most often stated the experiences was easy to discuss their issues without worry, feel non judged regardless of the situation.

My journey to mental healthcare

My most salient reason for helping clients is awareness of the pain suffering that brings people to treatment can be remedied with support and guidance.

My goals for you

Goals are the natural outcome once the individual feels free to openly discuss their issues, then given feedback for clarifying to elicit the specific nature of their desired outcomes

My first session with you

the first session will assist clients to feel safe and supported enough to freely speak abut their concerns, build a healthy therapeutic relationship, explore the clients immediate concerns for pursuing treatment to help determine direction for treatment.
