Joelle Griffin Russell is a Licensed Professional Counselor with a background of experience in education, the arts, clinical mental health counseling, and mental health emergency services. My counseling approach is person-centered and flexible, according to the needs and preferences of my clients.
My approach
Joelle has an integrative and humanistic approach to therapy and uses CBT techniques, as well as creative, Motivational Interviewing, trauma-aware, and strengths-based strategies.
My focus
Clients who are managing anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship issues, and professional challenges are the focus of my practice. My sessions are a safe space for clients of all genders, sexual orientations, races, and religious beliefs.
My communication style
My tone is warm but professional. Laughter or tears are no surprise in session. I won't waste your time chatting about myself, but I believe you will develop a level of comfort in the session to allow you to address whatever issues are your priority.
My journey to mental healthcare
Although I have always been interested in psychology and health professions, my first career was as a pianist and teacher. I became interested in music therapy and explored that career option, but in doing so found that I would prefer to have a larger toolbox and scope in addressing mental health, leading to professional training in counseling 15 years ago. Along the way, I have worked in mental health emergency services, in inpatient psychiatric facilities, and in in-person and telehealth therapy practices.
My goals for you
Clients sometimes come to therapy with a clear idea of their goals and are sometimes unsure of exactly what will be helpful to them. We will work collaboratively on treatment goals and check in regularly about your satisfaction with working toward those goals and the techniques we use to get there.
My first session with you
During the first session, I will ask you for background and general information, what you hope to work on, and any previous mental health treatment experience. You can share as much as you feel comfortable initially, and allow to for your trust in the relationship to develop.
