Quetiapine (Seroquel)

Quetiapine (Seroquel) is an atypical antipsychotic used across a range of conditions and doses. It comes in short-acting and long-acting forms. Higher doses treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, while lower doses are sometimes used as an add-on for depression (long-acting form).
It can raise the risk of weight gain and blood sugar changes, so providers usually monitor these over time.

Schizophrenia
Manic and depressive episodes in bipolar disorder
Add-on treatment for major depressive disorder

Common side effects are usually mild to moderate and include drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, and constipation.
As with other atypical antipsychotics, it carries a metabolic risk of weight gain and changes in blood sugar and cholesterol, so regular monitoring of weight and lab work is recommended.

Getting started
Therapy and psychiatry are both provided by highly trained mental health professionals. However, psychiatry may involve treatment through prescription medications – whereas therapy is focused on helping you process the challenges you’re facing through other methods, such as talk therapy.
Learn more about the differences on our blog.
Research shows that the combination of talk therapy and prescription medications can result in significantly better outcomes in the treatment of many common conditions. Whether you start with therapy, psychiatry, or both, Rula makes it easy to expand your care team.
Yes! Rula partners with insurance companies to bring you affordable, in-network care. Your individual cost may vary based on your insurance benefits and deductible — but don’t worry, we’ll work with your insurance to confirm your estimated per session cost before your first appointment.
Psychiatry at Rula
Rula offers psychiatry/medication management services nationwide to teens and adults aged 13 and up.
Psychiatric providers are able to prescribe a majority of FDA-approved psychiatric medications, with limited exceptions. For example, they are not able to prescribe certain experimental treatments such as ketamine. Certain stimulants are also subject to additional state-level regulations.
During your initial visit, you’ll meet with a licensed psychiatric provider over live video to discuss your medical history, individual concerns and goals for treatment. Initial intake appointments typically last an hour, and your provider will use the information provided in your first session to create a personalized treatment plan.
Your personalized treatment plan is tailored around your needs and goals for treatment. Your individual plan may include follow-ups recommended by your provider, a suggested frequency of appointments, an overview of prescribed medications (if applicable), and any referrals to other forms of mental or behavioral health care.
