Hi there! My name is Mary Norris, and I am a licensed independent clinical social worker based in Birmingham, Alabama. I work with clients via telehealth statewide. I work with clients from the ages of 18 years old to 100 years old. I specialize in anxiety and stress. I utilize Cognitive behavioral therapy along with acceptance and commitment therapy. I strive to help my patients to feel better and to make progress in therapy.
My approach
My approach to therapy varies on the needs of each of my individual clients that I work with. I frequently use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy along with acceptance and commitment therapy. Using these modalities helps me and my clients build a shared understanding of their reality and allows both my client and me to work towards planning a path forward.
My focus
I have found that my style and approach are a good fit for my younger adult and older adult clients both of whom may be dealing with the challenges of life transitions and social pressure. I have discovered that my clients are dealing with feelings of anxiety, depression, and stress. I work closely with my clients to navigate these life changes and to help my clients develop skills that will allow my clients to feel better about themselves as well as develop a positive outlook on life.
My communication style
My communication style is calm, caring, empathetic, and personable. My goal is for all my clients to feel comfortable with me and feel they can discuss any subject with me. I pride myself on my ability to listen to my clients without judgment.
My journey to mental healthcare
I decided to become a therapist because I have always wanted to help people whether it was volunteering as a Candy Striper at the local nursing home or being a trusted loyal friend. It has been natural for me to be drawn to people to help them in difficult times. I enjoy immensely seeing individuals become their personal best.
My goals for you
My approach to goal setting with my client is to work together with my clients and define what my clients want to accomplish in our sessions together. I start by building trust with my clients and help my clients feel comfortable in therapy. I will work with my clients to set goals and track their progress.
My first session with you
My clients can expect in our first session together is for us to focus and spend the majority of the time discussing my clients' feelings. I will be asking several questions to better understand the reasons why my clients may feel the way they do. I will build a strong connection with my clients, and this will help me to have a sense of where I guide my clients. Each client is different, and I like to listen first before arriving at assumptions. I will work with my clients to know what is best to move forward in their lives.
