My name is Devin Nigh and I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) based in Oakland, California and supporting California clients via telehealth sessions. I specialize in working with adolescents, adults, and families using a humanistic therapy approach and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy tools to help clients make positive changes in their lives. I support client’s facing issues such as Anxiety, Depression, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Trauma, and Substance Abuse. I identify as part of the LGBTQ community and am experienced in providing culturally competent care to clients who identify as LGBTQ, BIPOC, and as multiracial.
My approach
Although the approach I use often depends on the needs of who I am working with, I frequently use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and mindfulness techniques, as they provide many effective tools to achieve client’s goals. My work is based on humanistic therapy principles that emphasize the importance of a strong therapeutic alliance and I strive to create a positive and supportive environment in my therapy.
My focus
I work primarily with clients who are dealing with issues such as Anxiety, Depression, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Trauma, and Substance Abuse. These problems often manifest in ways that can get in the way of life goals and through our work, we can develop ways to navigate the world more successfully.
My communication style
My communication style is open, friendly, non-judgmental, and kind. I always treat my clients with respect and find humor can be helpful in building a positive therapeutic experience.
My journey to mental healthcare
I became interested in being a therapist after I saw what a positive change therapy made in my own life as a young adult. Working as a therapist with young people I have seen again and again how therapy can make a large, positive impact in the trajectory of a life. The satisfaction of supporting others to improve their lives motivates me in my work as a therapist.
My goals for you
I take a collaborative approach to goal setting, whether clients already know what they want to change or are still figuring out what they need. I work to support clients in identifying what actually motivates them and develop specific and concrete goals from there.
My first session with you
In our first session, you can expect us to spend some time getting to each other and me asking questions about what brought you to seek therapy. I will likely ask open-ended questions and you may share what feels comfortable to you. In addition to what brings you in, I will want to know about your interests and people you care about to learn more about you and your unique strengths. I will also explain some important information about therapy and answer any questions you may have about it.
