Hi there, I'm Jeannine!

Hello- my name is Jeannine Ray. I have 18 years of experience working with individuals and families as a family therapist and behavior analyst. I completed my Ph.D. and hold a doctorate in Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine and am a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of California. I have a master’s degree in counseling psychology and hold a license as an Independent Marriage and Family Therapist in Ohio and as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California. Additionally, I have advanced education, training, and experience in Applied Behavior Analysis and hold certification as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.

My approach

My counseling style is warm and interactive and is grounded in wellness and pragmatism with a client-focused, strength-based approach. I employ an empathic, direct, and practical counseling style, using a wide range of evidence-based tools to make our time most meaningful and enhance your everyday life concerns. I view clients through a developmental lens and use an eclectic approach from an evidence-based perspective, and meet people where they are and with techniques and interventions to best match their unique needs and experiences. This includes skillful and strategic use of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), object relations, family systems, Gestalt, and narrative therapies, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), with an individualized, person-centered focus and psychodynamic/existential theoretical framework.

My focus

I have helped people with a wide range of concerns including post-traumatic stress disorder, childhood sexual abuse and sexual assault, depression, anxiety, attachment and parenting issues, relationship and family issues, career and academic challenges, decision-making, and problem-solving. Other related experience includes teaching behavior analysis and supervising the fieldwork of behavior analyst interns and clinical mental health counseling graduate students. I have a particular interest in helping veterans and working with them on a variety of issues and concerns. Military veterans and their families are my primary clinical focus. As a behavior analyst, I have extensive experience working with families of children and adults with special needs, including autism, ADHD, intellectual disabilities, and other special needs. I create behavior plans for the individual as well as work with parents and caregivers in grief, loss, and acceptance and support them and their needs under very challenging life circumstances.

My communication style

I use holistic and eclectic approaches with flexible, consistent interventions customized for the individual, and believe a good relationship between a therapist and client is key to the process of therapy. Empathy, compassion, trust, and respect are cornerstones of my approach.

My journey to mental healthcare

My background is in cultural anthropology. I learned through obtaining that undergraduate degree that I was interested in people- what they did and why they did it. That led me to seek further education in psychology and I learned that I loved working directly with patients.

My goals for you

I have worked extensively with individuals, groups, and families. While helping people develop tools and skills to empower them and help them achieve their goals, I support people through their process and share their journey. Please let me know what you want to achieve through the therapy experience (such as working on long-term issues that may go back to childhood or a very direct treatment plan for a specific concern, such as lifestyle changes, a particular phobia, or social anxiety). I bring a wealth of practical and academic knowledge to the practice of psychology and seek to build a collaborative bond with clients in order to work together to achieve better mental health.

My first session with you

In the first session, we will address any questions or concerns you may have. I will share the process of therapy such as length of sessions and the nature of the work we will be doing together. I will also clarify the laws relating to confidentiality and the limitations of this, such as the need to disclose certain information in the event of an emergency, emergency contact information for you, and my mandated reporting obligations.
