Hi there, I'm Karen; I am passionate about helping you to heal and grow in your relationship with yourself and others. I am a licensed Marriage and Family therapist. My approach is to listen to you and respond in ways that are tailored to your unique needs and circumstances. I want to get to know you first thoroughly and help you to explore pathways to growth and healing.
My approach
My approach is to listen to you and respond in ways that are tailored to your unique needs and circumstances. I want to get to know you first thoroughly and help you to explore pathways to growth and healing. I have many areas of specialized training and prefer to utilize evidenced-based practices, including EMDR for trauma, cognitive approaches such as CBT and DBT to assist with emotional issues, and family-based treatment for adolescents struggling with eating disorders. I also specialize in couples counseling utilizing Sue Johnson's Emotionally Focused Couples therapy. I have completed externships with leaders in their fields and sought out training in these areas of focus.
My focus
I have worked over the past 23 years with both individuals and families. I experienced assisting military families and veterans returning from deployment experiencing reintegration problems and PSTD. I work with couples struggling with relationship problems that seem to re-experience familiar patterns of conflict and are searching for a path to re-connection. I also specialize in working with adolescents and their families struggling with problems of eating disorders.
My communication style
I will initially meet and get to know you. I hope to develop a relationship of mutuality and trust. I feel that hope is crucial to healing and hope to inspire trust and community within a therapeutic relationship of healing and growth.
My journey to mental healthcare
Many years ago, I heard a quote from St Augustine who said: "Hope has two beautiful daughters, anger at the way things are, and the courage to change them." I have found that journeys of hope are easier taken with someone by our side. It is from this belief, that I aspire to assist you and your loved ones in this journey of hope, as I have often in life been assisted by others. I hope to pay it forward in this life and always be grateful for the experiences shared.
My goals for you
I like to work mutually on goals, to hear about your priorities in growth, and consider goals to be often evolving as you progress in your healing journey.
My first session with you
During the first session, I want to listen and explore with you your needs and desires in treatment. I will complete an assessment and treatment plan with you during our initial session. At the end of the session, we should have an idea and a general plan to move forward. We can set up a schedule for the next session at the conclusion of our meeting.
