Hi there, I'm Richard!

As an undergraduate student at San Jose State University (SJSU), I had the opportunity to conduct doctoral-level research under close faculty guidance. This experience was a turning point in my life, setting me on the path to becoming a therapist.

My approach

My approach to therapy integrates a deep understanding of identity, culture, and history. I aim to help clients gain insight into how powerful systems in society can impact vulnerable individuals and communities. Through an eclectic blend of modalities including CBT, EMDR, and culturally sensitive approaches, I empower clients to develop coping skills, build self-esteem, and navigate life's challenges.

My focus

I specialize in working with adolescents, adults, and those struggling with issues such as addiction, trauma, grief, and racial identity. I am passionate about serving diverse populations and providing an affirming space for all.

My communication style

My communication style is warm, collaborative, and person-centered. I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship to foster growth and healing. Through active listening and thoughtful reflection, I help clients find their inner strength and resilience.

My journey to mental healthcare

My journey to mental healthcare began with inspirational research on Cesar Chavez, a civil rights leader who shared my Mexican-American heritage. His life story illuminated the struggles faced by farmworkers, immigrants, and marginalized communities, mirroring the challenges in my own community. This experience ignited my passion for social change and set me on the path to earning my Master of Social Work from Columbia University.

My goals for you

My goal is to provide you with a safe, non-judgmental space to process your experiences, gain new insights, and develop practical strategies for positive change. Whether you are facing a current crisis, looking to resolve past wounds, or seeking personal growth, I will support you every step of the way.

My first session with you

During our first session, we will discuss what brings you to therapy and collaborate to establish goals aligned with your unique needs and vision for your life. I will take time to understand your background, strengths, and challenges. From there, we will begin the process of identifying obstacles and building the skills and self-understanding to overcome them. You can expect me to be fully present, engaged, and committed to your well-being.
