My name is Sharon Stines and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and certified EMDR therapist. I specialize in trauma and abuse recovery.
My approach
My primary modalities are attachment-based EMDR, Ego-State/Inner Family Systems/Inner Child and Schema Therapy. I am solution focused. I am also an addictions specialist.
My focus
I typically work with people who have been traumatized by a narcissistic relationship. My clients are often stuck in a trauma bond with a toxic person and want a way out, or they may have been victims of any type of abuse as a child. They want their life back. I offer my experience, skill set, and relationship to help clients meet their goals of abuse/trauma recovery, healing and freedom. Because I am a Christian, I also offer faith-based therapy for those interested in it. And, as a recovering alcoholic, I also offer addiction recovery counseling as well.
My communication style
I am relaxed, direct, honest, accepting, and "laid back." I want my clients to feel comfortable and safe with me. I do not judge, but I will offer my opinion if warranted. I do not like to waste people's time so I attempt to help clients reach their personal goals for each session. I believe that healing happens in the context of relationship; therefore, I try to develop a safe and healthy relationship with my clients.
My journey to mental healthcare
I grew up in a fatherless, abusive, neglectful household in the 1960s. I experienced a lot of consequences because of that, including serious drug use and alcohol dependence. I put myself through college and became an engineer in the 80s and 90s. During that time I earned an MBA degree. I was married to a man with two children and became a custodial stepmother and biological mother of 4 children. My stepchildren had attachment issues, which caused me to begin researching attachment trauma, of which I studied when I pursued a doctorate degree in psychology. There is so much more I could say. Suffice it to say that I have a passion for helping people overcome the effects of abuse/trauma/addiction/abandonment because of these and other life experiences. I became a certified EMDR therapist because trauma can be challenging to treat and EMDR offers relief for people struggling with all types of abuse, neglect, and even addictions.
My goals for you
I ask clients what their goals are for therapy. If they don't know, I ask them how will they know when they have achieved what they sought therapy for. I also tell them that once we get to know each other and work together I can help them define their goals more clearly.
My first session with you
Usually I do the intake paperwork. I ask client's why they are seeking therapy and what their goals are and how can I best help them.
