My specialty—working with you to finally overcome your anxiety problems, OCD, or relationship issues—benefits from my 30+ years of helping others. I review all new research. I have written self-help books on anxiety disorders and research papers with UCSD on social anxiety. Compassion, warmth, and skill in individualizing therapy aid in recovery.
My approach
My approach to helping you is based on current evidence-based cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness, and exposure-response prevention for OCD. I always work at your pace. I have extensive training in these areas from a Harvard Medical School-affiliated hospital—McLean Hospital, where I was appointed a fellow in their cognitive behavior therapy unit.
My focus
I only work with people who want to overcome anxiety, OCD, or relationship issues. I have special expertise in these areas and can be the most effective. My past fear of flying gives me a personal understanding of anxiety and panic attacks. I know that recovery is possible! I now fly free of anxiety!
My communication style
I listen to your concerns and what you hope to gain from our counseling sessions to work out a treatment plan together..."Shirley helped me feel very open and comfortable when we first met. She listened and was skilled about how to help me with my anxiety at work."
My journey to mental healthcare
I have always wanted to be a therapist because I really like meeting people from different backgrounds and helping them overcome issues getting in their way. I find this career very rewarding!
My goals for you
I listen to your concerns and what you hope to gain from our sessions. I also ask enough about you to work together on a treatment plan with goals. I see our first session as a time to see if I'm the right therapist for you and answer your questions and concerns.
My first session with you
During our first session, I will see what problems you want help with. I may have you answer some standard forms on your problems if it will help. I see our first session as a time where I can see if I am the right therapist for you, answer any questions you have, and if I think we are a good match, continue to have more sessions. If either of us feels a different therapist would be better, I would encourage you to seek another more appropriate counselor.
