My name is Kelly Smarkel, I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in Sacramento, California, and I work with clients statewide via Telehealth. I work with adults and specialize in anxiety, depression, stress, and life transitions. I utilize Talk Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing to help clients gain greater insight and understanding to make progress toward their goals and start to feel better.
My approach
My approach to therapy varies based on the needs of each client. I utilize a Humanistic Approach to help clients achieve their highest potential and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to focus on how thinking can change feelings and behaviors to build a shared understanding of their own reality and personal resilience.
My focus
I work well with adults of all ages, from young adults to seniors. I believe every stage of life has its challenges, and I enjoy helping others navigate those transition periods together. Through my educational background and lived experience, I can relate to many issues that often take the form of anxiety, depression, stress, and feeling lost or hopeless. I strive to help my clients develop a roadmap to wellness allowing them to have hope and excitement for the future.
My communication style
I offer a compassionate and collaborative approach. I strive to meet my clients where they are at, meaning I do not have a one size fits all approach to therapy. I embrace a variety of therapeutic interventions and types of therapy appropriate for each person. I aim to create a calm, inviting, and non-judgmental space where clients can feel safe and comfortable sharing their personal thoughts and emotions.
My journey to mental healthcare
Mr. Fred Rogers said "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." I have always felt like one of Mr. Rogers' helpers, so naturally, I pursued a career in social work and therapy. Social work is a dynamic and unique helping profession rich with meaning, action, and the power to make a difference in people's lives. I enjoy helping clients learn to cope, manage, and overcome problems while empowering them to create change in their own lives. It is truly the most rewarding and fulfilling work of my life.
My goals for you
My approach to goal setting with clients is all about working together to define what you want to accomplish in our time together. I am here to help you achieve your goals, and we will work together to set goals and track your progress.
My first session with you
The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other. I will ask questions to explore what brings you to therapy, your mental health goals, and allow you to share in your own words what encouraged you to reach out. You may also ask me any questions you might have.
