Not currently accepting patients

Hi there, I'm Judy!

My name is Judy Matthews. I have a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and have been licensed for many years. I earned my degrees in Chicago and in San Diego. I have lived in San Diego for over 30 years. Although over the years, I have treated children, adolescents and adults, I am now focusing on older adolescents and adults who are dealing with trauma, mood disorders, anxiety and interpersonal/relationship issues.

My approach

For the last 25 years or so, I have been using Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment therapy. I find these approaches most useful because not only do they help resolve current issues, they provide skills that we can use in the future.

My focus

Typically, I like to work with individuals coping and resolving trauma, depression, anxiety and interpersonal problems. At this time I am focusing on older adolescents and adults. I have experience in domestic violence and various types of abuse.

My communication style

I enjoy using acceptance and even sharing to gain insight or understanding of my client's difficulties and their view of the world. I hope to make my clients feel that they are heard and understood.

My goals for you

Goal setting is important because it sets the plan for what is to be focused on in therapy and when the client has become successful at using the skills they have learned. The goals that are set should be a result of agreement between the therapist and client.

My first session with you

I view the first session as a time for the therapist and client to get to know each other and begin the road to setting shared goals. This is the time for the client to learn about the therapist's approach and
