John Breslin, LMFT 105601. My approach to therapy is working with the client in understanding what they are dealing with, what their challenges are, what obstacles they need to overcome, and supporting them throughout their journey. As a behaviorist CBT DBT, I have worked many years in the mental health field with children, teens, adults, and families. I specialize in anger management and co-parenting. I have also had the opportunity to work with Autistic children and their families in both in-home programs and school settings. I also was able to provide therapy at a couple of high schools as a part of the healthy start program. Additionally, I have worked at a level 14 residential treatment facility for boys, as well as providing behavioral health services to patients in a psychiatric treatment facility.
My approach
My approach to therapy working from a behavior perspective is to support the client as they get to a place where they can be successful, flourish, and create and build healthier habits towards establishing a better life.
My focus
The clients that I have typically worked with are individuals, couples, families, and groups that are challenged by the everyday struggles of life, who have mental health issues, and those with behavior problems.
My communication style
My communication style is very upfront and honest. My goal is to understand the things that you have been through and are going through. I ask questions, listen with empathy, reflect, and rephrase so that I can understand your situation, your story, and how to support you best.
My journey to mental healthcare
My journey starts in my senior year in high school. I took a psychology course and enjoyed learning about different ideas and so I stuck to that course. Got my B.A. in Psychology and minored in Social Work. Next, I went on and got my master's in Marriage Family Child Counseling and then went on to eventually get licensed. Throughout this journey, I gained a lot of experience and knowledge about several different aspects of life both in failure and success persevering and learning how to overcome many obstacles in life. In the middle of my journey, I met with my college counselor who really supported me and help me find direction which helped me stay on course. So I believe that it's important to have someone in your life whose only real agenda is to help you! And I want to be that guy!
My goals for you
Goal setting in therapy is the backbone of the process of getting to a better place. It's where we design the patterns for success. It's important to set both small and big goals so that we continue working towards bettering ourselves.
My first session with you
In the first session and every session, the client should expect an opportunity to share their story, and to have someone listen with empathy, and curiosity while giving support and encouragement. Creating a safe place where you feel comfortable discussing/sharing your story.
