My name is Laura Melendez and I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) based in Carlsbad, CA, and working with clients statewide via telehealth. I work with individuals, teens, and children/parenting. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness when working with anxiety, depression, self-esteem struggles, and parent coaching to help my clients meet their goals.
My approach
Each individual is unique, therefore I get to know my client and based on their need I will match them with the best therapeutic approach. I frequently use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness. These are great tools for helping me understand my clients while they are actively using practical strategies that help them feel better.
My focus
There are so many challenges and pressure that life can present. These stressors create depression, anxiety, and the inability of parents to help children navigate life. I help my clients slow down and take a look at where they want to be. I help provide them with the tools and psychoeducation that help them feel better and thrive.
My communication style
I have two communication styles, I can be a coach and psychoeducate you or I am a non-judgemental listener. Both styles start with empathy and a genuine commitment to helping you obtain a more positive life.
My journey to mental healthcare
Volunteering was very important to my family. From an early age, we would assist with programs that helped families in need. I was always drawn in by their stories and how I was making a difference in their lives. I knew that was what I wanted to do with my life, help others become empowered and change their own lives.
My goals for you
I would start by building rapport and trust as I actively listen to your story of why you are here. My approach would have us working together in goal setting and what you would like to accomplish in our time together that directly would affect your life. We would track your progress and make adjustments along the way.
My first session with you
My goal for our first session would be to hear how you have been feeling and how you are experiencing these feelings. I may ask questions to gain a deeper understanding of your situation. I want to start building trust by listening non-judgmentally. I will never assume I know what is best for you, we will collaborate and form a path for the next steps to take.
